Notes on Barnardo Bibliography

39. Trew, Reg One of a Baker's Dozen North Ferriby: Badgerwood Publications LLP, 2003

A small blue paperback book of 204 pages with a picture on the front cover of the author and three other members of his family when first in the care of Dr Barnardo's Homes, and on the back cover the publisher's note: This is the second of a series of Barnardo Biographies published by Badgerwood Publications LLP. Reg Trew tells the story of how four children from a large family were taken into the care of Dr. Barnardo's Homes in the 1930s, when families were readily split up. His vivid memories of those first few days in the Headquarters at Stepney are well told. His ambition to become a sailor is fulfilled, despite many difficulties, and his time spent in the Watts Naval Training School provides one of the most detailed accounts of that establishment.

His wartime years of naval service are related with colour and enjoyment.

A family of his own brings a change of life, which is poignantly described, and his second career as a school teacher is much shaped by his Barnardo childhood.
