Barnardos by Badgerwood

© Badgerwood 2000 Thomas John Barnardo FRCS(Ed) 1845-1905 was an evangelical Christian philanthropist who cared for children. Working primarily in the East End of London he founded a number of places for orphans which became well known in the first half of the 20th century as Dr. Barnardo's Homes. This huge organisation cared for thousands of children in Residential Homes, Training Schools, and foster homes; many were sent to Australia and Canada. By the end of this last century the state welfare system had almost entirely taken over the care of unwanted children, and present-day Barnardos is a very different kind of organisation (visit off-site).
"'Barnardos Children'", as portrayed in the 1995 BBC documentary, "suffered greatly from the suppression of information on their family background." Is this true?
Did many of those who spent their childhood in Dr.Barnardo's Homes grow up to be happy and contributing adults?
What was Dr Barnardo's significant contribution to society? We present Dr Barnardo's Homes through an annotated bibliography (visit) and the publication of: Barnardo biographies (visit).
